What is Muhurat trading?
Muhurat trading is a special trading activity that takes place for an hour in the evening on the occasion of Diwali, also known as the beginning of Vikram Samvat. As a symbol of the new Samvat, the Indian stock exchanges closed the trading window for the entirety of the day except for a designated hour in the evening from 6.15 p.m. to 7.15 p.m. for placing orders.
The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) both get ready on the day of the Laxmi Pujan to welcome the new Samvat.
On the day of Diwali, the Hindus of India perform rituals for the goddess Laxmi. The positive, auspicious omens of good fortune, prosperity, success, and happiness are all attributed to Goddess Lakshmi in the Vedas.
It is said that the planetary alignments on this day are also quite favorable, bringing success and abundance to all. The Festival of Lights, a religious holiday, honors the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and hope over despair. It is a happy event.
Vikram Samvat, a new Hindu year, is specifically observed in Gujarat and Maharashtra. The new Hindu year officially starts on Diwali with the Laxmi puja.
Gujarat considers the day after Diwali to be the beginning of the new Hindu year. It is important to emphasize that Gujarat and Maharashtra dominate the Indian stock market industry.
To ensure that the coming year is filled with peace, happiness, prosperity, and wealth, the investment and trading communities of India pay prayers to the Goddess Laxmi. Therefore, for everyone involved in the financial industry, Muhurat trading is considered the luckiest day of the year.
It is believed that even a penny invested on this special trading day will result in wealth and success for the rest of the year.
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) introduced Muhurat trading in 1957 and 1992, respectively. People who work in the stock market dress in traditional ethnic attire on this auspicious day, performing rituals for the goddess Laxmi to invoke luck and prosperity.
It is generally known that everyone in India, from small retail investors to extremely wealthy HNIs, lines up to purchase shares on this auspicious day as a sign of worship for the Goddess of Fortune. Due to the small number of significant institutions participating on this particular day, it is seen that the volume is extremely low and that price fluctuations or the spread between the buy and sell are subtly bigger.
