AIADMK, a major political party in Tamil Nadu, has decided to end its partnership with the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. It’s a big blow to the BJP ahead of the LS elections in 2024. In a meeting led by General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, AIADMK officially said they don’t want to work with the ruling party at the national level anymore, so they are leaving the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
AIADMK’s choice to end its alliance with the BJP came after a thorough discussion involving key AIADMK officials, including district secretaries and MLAs. The party issued a unanimous resolution to express its strong disapproval of the BJP’s actions in Tamil Nadu, which were perceived as deliberate attacks on AIADMK’s historical figures and principles.
AIADMK pointed out that the state leaders of the BJP have been consistently making unwarranted criticisms about their former leaders, their General Secretary EPS, and their party members for the past year. Consequently, during today’s meeting, this resolution was unanimously approved. People outside AIADMK’s office in Chennai celebrated enthusiastically upon hearing about this decision.
An AIADMK spokesperson expressed strong feelings, saying, “The BJP’s state group doesn’t have respect for us. They keep criticizing our leaders. The top leaders of the BJP haven’t done anything to stop Annamalai. BJP depends on us more than we depend on them.”
When it comes to the talk about meetings with important BJP leaders, AIADMK explained, “We never asked to meet with Amit Shah (Union Home Minister), and he didn’t say no to us either. These rumors are all incorrect.” Additionally, the party stressed that the decision made by the general secretary is the last word, and everyone in AIADMK must follow it.
The tension between AIADMK and BJP grew because the BJP’s leader in the state, K Annamalai, made controversial comments about the respected Dravidian leader, CN Annadurai, who has passed away. This disagreement led to a senior AIADMK leader, D Jayakumar, ending the partnership between the two parties in September.
Jayakumar said that Annamalai’s remarks reflected the party’s position on the matter and that decisions about working together would be made during the elections. He strongly emphasized that AIADMK supporters wouldn’t accept any disrespect toward the late chief minister.
The reason Jayakumar gave for his decision was that Annamalai had said unkind things about AIADMK leaders, including the late J Jayalalithaa, and the party’s general secretary. He promised that this choice wouldn’t harm AIADMK’s chances in the elections and said he was sure they would win.
It’s crucial to note that senior BJP figures expressed interest in finding solutions and that they were prepared to calmly resolve any issues between the AIADMK and the BJP wing in the state.
The tally of the 2019 elections in Tamil Nadu was not satisfactory for the BJP. There were setbacks for them; they only won one seat in the state. On the other hand, the DMK and Congress together did really well. They won the majority of the seats—30 out of 39 in total. The Congress won 8 seats, and the DMK won 24 seats.
